This is great debauched fun with a twist on death metal all to itself. That said, it’s not even death metal because you can actually hear what they’re singing about, but the vibe of the band is death metal meets Big Hair Bands from the 80s (Scorpians, Def Lepord, etc.) If you’re a fan of Furnace Face and wondering if there’s another band out there having as much fun, then give this a spin (or a download.)
The songs are very well mixed (i.e., produced) and there is a definite softness to the hardness, which means it has a vulnerability to it, which again means, it’s truthful. Mystechs (mystechs.com) appear to be all about the message (no bombs, feed the hungry, etc.) since there is not a drummer or a bass player to be found. Though, there is a really cute Asian girl in knee-high leather lace-ups (what does she see in these guys?) She seems to be having a good time and every now and then she’s allowed to toss in a backing vocal.
Heck she even sings at the start of one of the tunes and it’s hard to believe it’s her. She has a great voice and the song in question is a duet of busted face love and sitting in a prison cell, etc. (Goodbyes baby, I’ll see you in Hell...I throw a knife in your gut...ahh...you slut...) It totally sounds like a ballad Jon Bon-Jovi would die to write, like something he might have written back in his Jersey days when he as less self-assured.
Mystechs have a very unique sound and it’s fascinating to listen to hard metal band make songs without a drummer or a even a bass player. Yes, usually we hate pad drums and pre-programmed beats, but in this case it’s working and I can’t help but highly recommend it. At least check their site out. What a lot of fun and great guitar work.
