Primes are pretty interesting. They sound sort of like an experimental electronica pop band. Kind of taking elements of synthpop, but retaining a fairly focused techno edge to it. Lots of weird little quirks and beeping. Initially it makes me think of bizarro electronic music like Mu, but by the end though it kind of makes me thing of mid-90s industrial rock.
Not really sure what to make of it, it’s pretty all over the place, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Actually much the opposite the shifts in style actually help to keep it fairly fresh. And there is an interesting sort of harshness to the synth sounds used, even while the music is pretty poppy. Definitely a music of contrasts.
Though it makes me thing of a lot of other bands, most of which I can’t really place. Maybe that’s it – it reminds me of little bits of all sorts of other things, so much so that it actually makes something new out of all the parts.
It’s almost like a schizophrenic that loves electronic music, like all electronic music and is trying to get their brain focused enough to make songs. There is just a lot of weird little diversions and additions and things, not necessarily all making sense.
It reminds me a little of this time that my friend brought over Mass Civilization by Curse of the Golden Vampire, which was supposed to be an electronic death metal album. So I asked, ‘is it good?’, and my friend says, ‘listen’.
So he put it on and we just sat there in silence and listened to the whole thing. At the end my friend says, ‘well?’ And I go, ‘I have absolutely no idea’. And he says to me, ‘good, I just thought maybe I wasn’t getting it’.
So we figured it was maybe just to far ahead of its’ time for us. But I feel a little bit like that with Primes. Just that I don’t fully get it. Maybe I’m just not hip to this new weirdo electronic pop I don’t know but whatever it is I think maybe it’s good.
But even then I’m not absolutely sure of that. Maybe I hate it, but just don’t know it yet, maybe I will hate it. Maybe I get it completely but only like some of the sounds. Maybe I love it but it’s a new sort of love, one which I have never experienced before so I cant really base my feelings on any sort of past experience. So that it has given me an entirely new emotion, one which I didn’t even know could exist.
That would be actually pretty cool. An album creating a new range of emotions and furthering humanity on its’ path to evolution, eventually making a whole new society, and species. Though I really don’t think it is that. I think I just don’t really get what they are doing.
Which is good, because it’s nice to be stumped every now and then it sorta makes you stop and think and maybe even listen to the album a few more times than you otherwise would. And working to appreciate something isn’t so bad, is it?
