E.S.L.

Independent, 2008

A particularly fun gypsy-jazz-folk romp with four devilishly cute Vancouver gals. Excellent musicianship is flaunted wildly all over the place here with cellos, violins pianos really shining bright. The musicians all have pedigree - the group includes members of Girl Nobody, Po' Girl, Caryolyn Mark, Be Good Tanyas and The Doers. Things get quite rowdy towards the end of the album with high-spirited covers of the Velvets classic "Venus In Furs", a Polish number, "Czarne Oczy" and a gender-bending version of Beastie Boys ode to "Girls". Highly listenable and infectiously fun, E.S.L. are a new band worth seeking out.
