Starting his musical career in post hardcore group Suction, Alexander Tucker has since spread his experimental wings, having worked with a range of people from Sunn0))) musician Stephen O’Malley to U.K artist Lali Chetwynd, all the while releasing music that is one part folk and three parts experimentation. His latest offering, Portal, is no exception, combining psychedelia, acoustic and drone to create a unique collection of sounds.

Portal begins with ‘Poltergeists Grazing’; an alluring title for an alluring song that, through its ambient effects and acoustic mixed with fuzzy guitar sound, makes for a breezy, summery and psychedelic opener.

‘Veins to the Sky’ continues in a similar pattern, with Tucker’s voice still reminiscent of the Post hardcore scene albeit now much more mellow and soothing but still sounding able to roar into aggression if needed. ‘Omi-Baron’ combines droning guitar with a haunting folk sound, shifting the balance onto the electric guitar work and finding a track that, if perhaps a little longer & louder, wouldn’t be too out of place on an Earth recording.

‘Bell Jars’ too has an Earth style Americana feel to it yet the instrumental chorus stands separately as violins and xylophones build in sound and energy together, creating an odd and trippy as well as addictive track.

Already being coined by the neo-genre posse as Doom-folk, Alexander Tucker has enough influence from both folk and metal to appease fans of an open mind on both fronts.

Despite the cringe the concept of post drone metal and folk might induce, the effect is hypnotic, well crafted and thoroughly enjoyable.
