Formed by Vocalist Uchino in ninety-six, Coffins is a Japanese Doom/ Death Metal group consisting also of You on Drums (that’s his name by the way, not you) and Koreeda on Bass.

“The Other Side of Blasphemy” is their newest release and will surely find a home with any J-Doom fans out there merely from the bands geographical selling point alone!

But Japanophile sub-cultures aside, Coffins, regardless of their nation of origin, are a force to be reckoned with in their own right, ripping it up from the offset with their opening track ‘Under The Stench’ a slow and awe inspiringly heavy track that gurgles through distortion like a giant bringing up bile. Add a little momentum and already ‘Buried Death’ is a must-have release from the opening track alone!

The eponymous track from the album speeds up a notch while Uchino does the hallmark guttural vocals thing with aplomb, the other band members just as confident in their abrasive intensity of sound.

‘Altars in Gore’ is just as vitriolic in sound as its namesake, taking on a Thrash element through the track’s increase in tempo and repetition while ‘Deadly Sinners’ keeps the pace with a piston heavy sound accompanied by both death metal screeches and black metal growls.

From such a little known act you’ll be blown away by just how good these guys are, giving the likes of Gallhammer a run for their money in the race of J-Doom champions while at the same time climbing ever so closely toward the pedestal on which Church of Misery and Boris so proudly stand.

It’s official; Japan just got heavier and it’s all thanks to Coffins!
