I've been finding it hard to put something down on paper about Rayne's ‘black album’ despite the fact that I've been listening to it non-stop. Rayne was a band of four brothers from New Orleans who came together in 1977 and toured around the South, eventually recording this album entirely live off the floor on home recording equipment.
Released in 1977 in a run of 300 copies, they brothers never found the success they were looking for, and at one point in history grew so frustrated they shot the records up with a shotgun. With this album probably worth a small fortune on the collector's market these days, they might be kicking themselves for that, but they're probably glad that they're finally getting some kudos on their kick ass music.
Not exactly psyche, nor classic rock the album is hard to put a finger on exactly. It's just soulful, straightforward rock with a bit of an edge and a dark mood. A really good album that stands up to countless repeat listens.
