Alright then, I’ve been waiting patiently for the follow up to Tank, which is probably one of my most listened to albums. The more I have listened to that album the more I like it. So lets just say expectations were high for Punkara.

On initial listen I have to say I was pretty disappointed, while good not much really stood out. So I was depressed for a few days, but then I decided to listen to it again. And I liked a few more songs, but still nothing to blow my mind.

So after a few more days depression it occurred to me; I had the same impression of Tank which took me a while to get into it. So then it made me much happier. Maybe, just maybe, Asian Dub Foundation hadn’t failed me, but had created another masterpiece.

So here’s what I am going to do, I ‘m going to let it ferment for a few more days then I will continue on with this review. Alright I listened again yeah and it’s totally growing on me. Not nearly as aggressive as Tank though. It leans much more towards the dub aspect of ADF’s music.

There is more of a rawness to this album that I wasn’t sure about at first; like it almost sounds like an attempt to make it sound more punk, while really the music isn’t that punk. It makes it sound maybe a little more angry, but then the music isn’t really that angry, maybe that is the point of it. Make it sound rough so that slower dubby tracks seem more edgy.

So there are some really great slow groovy tracks, while the political messages of course haven’t changed. anti-globalization unity etc are still right at the forefront, and there is maybe the best cover of The Stooges No Fun, that I have ever heard.

It might not be for everyone, as it is absolutely not rocking. Little bit hard to say too much though, as the songs have yet to really get stuck I n my head the way Tank has, and I really want to describe it like that which would be totally unfair. I don’t know but yeah it is good.

Just go listen to Tank, or maybe listen to Punkara first. Both are worth it. Actually anything ADF does seems to be pure gold. That makes me happy. Partly because I like the music, but also I think they bring some interesting perspectives to the politics of their music. And I do love political music.
