Endstilles is very bad death metal. And I would like to stop the review there, just bad metal. But I don’t know if that is really true. Perhaps it is just really generic sounding, or it could be that I can’t get over the fascist imagery all over this release. I mean this could even be interesting, taking the anger of metal and crossing it into an anger against all of humanity. Could be kind of an interesting concept and way of addressing the problems of humanity, though I cant help but feel that there motives might be questionable.
I also cant shake the feeling that they are largely trying to recreate what many bands have done before using shocking imagery to make a point. But this makes me think too much of this guy I used to know, who used to ironically use like images of Auschwitz and such to make himself seem really hardcore. And he swore that it was just a mixture of the harshness of the images and the taboo nature of liking things like SS uniforms etc. but there where times when this guy would get going and the semi-bigoted vile that would come out of his mouth was just downright shocking.
In fact I think he liked the Nazi ideology a lot more than he wanted anyone to know, or maybe he was just deluding himself. But by that same token many bands have been able to use the Nazi/fascist imagery to make valid pints criticizing society etc, forcing people to examine there own beliefs and prejudices. so really it could be anything.
But really what it comes down to is that the metal is just pretty generic. I think that is the important part of this whole review. Regardless of the message, it really just doesn’t come through. And musically it really doesn’t excite.
