Anavan are an LA group associated with the Smell scene. Their sound is not what you might expect from the Paper Rad-ish artwork or if you happen to be familiar with other noisy art-punk Smell bands though: high energy, glossy electronic pop with great production values is their stock in trade.
A trio with two singers - male and female, their sound has elements of Adult, Rapture, Rites of Spring, 80’s new wave, San Francisco/LA band The Lovemakers, etc. The bands focuses on heavily synthesized sounds, bordering at times on videogamey with synthy sounding vocoder processing on the vocals even.
All in all pretty fun and dancey. What more can I say? They’re not reinventing the wheel or speaking to a generation, just nice pop music that does what it’s supposed to do.
