I didn’t really know what to expect when I put this CD into my stereo; I held my breath and waited for that crucial first note and let me say I was impressed. Miguel Mendez’ voice is like a hybrid of Elliot Smith and Hayden, very melodic, slightly raspy but undeniably beautiful. His record, My Girlfriend is Melting is much like that, with tracks that are slow and lyrics that read like poetry, Miguel has put together a very lovely album that had me enthralled from the moment his voice played through the speakers. His use of different sounds and a voice that is melodic and gentle whilst still upholding a masculine fullness combined with fantastic guitar and piano equals a record that I couldn’t take out of my CD player.

The albums begins with the song “Drinking Beers”. The guitar reminded me a lot of Adam Green, very catchy and happy as well as being simple and clean. His voice is very low with harmonies that really compliment both his guitar and his voice. The lyrics are the part of the song that I enjoy the most and Miguel has an incredible talent for writing lyrics that are honest, and in this case slightly humorous, but that also flow incredibly well. The words stick in your mind as being wonderfully fun to listen to. This song is a good representation of what you can expect from this album: soft, slow and gentle with lyrics that are honest and fun to listen to.

In contrast, the next song on the album, “Maniac Psycho” is faster and harder then its predecessor. This song is much more aggressive but it still maintains a very well executed relationship between vocals and instruments. Miguel is fantastic at matching his voice to the mood of a song, and in “Maniac Psycho” he allows himself to be a little less melodic and a little harsher. This change results in a great song that definitely stands apart from the majority softer, prettier songs on this album.

“Catchin A Wave” is a wonderful song, which makes use of Miguel’s talent on piano. It begins with very gentle, melodic and simple piano triads and then Miguel’s voice comes in softly. He lets the piano carry the song, only adding a few vocals to complement his playing. The song ends with a mesmerizing, eerily gorgeous repetitive pattern on the piano. I enjoyed this song immensely because of how wonderful the piano is, and how it is slightly unusually to hear actual piano in music instead of a keyboard that is just holding a few notes over and over. Another song that makes use of the piano rather nicely is “Number Race”, which has a very long piano solo that I found very fun to listen to.

My Girlfriend is Melting is one of my new favorite CDs, I honestly cannot stop listening to this honest and pure music. Miguel Mendez is an extremely talented singer/songwriter/jack-of-all-trades who has made an outstanding piece of music. As soon as I finished listening to it I immediately had to listen to it one more time, and after that I had to tell all of my friends about how great this music was. This album is like no other new album that I have been able to find in a long time and I am so happy that it has come along to save our ears from bad music.
