My eyelids are a little tired, but my ears and my curiosity aren't. There is a lot of stuff I need to do, but what has been on my mind a lot are the things I should do, as opposed to things I need to, like the laundry. I should write a letter to my Aunt. I should fix my Zippo's flint. I should rearrange my living room. I should change the brake pads on my bike, you know?
What brings up this pause and poke around is sometimes background songs can help you get a lot of things done.
This point hit me when put on the CD, Sing Along with The Acid House Kings, by this Swedish band called... the Acid House Kings. I'll be honest, this band is perfect to do things to.
The folky kind sound is reassuring and comfy. The press junket that came with the CD doesn't mention this for some reason but this band sounds a lot like Belle and Sebastian – kind of witty independent rock from Europe. The lyrics are all in English and there are two lead singers, Niklas Angerard and Julia Lannerheim whose voices sound very nice together.
My theory about the utility value of this band is helped along by the fact that one of their songs is called, I Write Summer Songs For No Reason. I mean I have to do the dishes, but there is no reason to write my aunt except that I want to.
The songs are about just being, just living and they are great. It is refreshing to listen to a song about someone's summer dress. It's also nice to hear a tune about sleeping! The music is guitar mellow, sweeping, well just like 'ol B and S.
I want to talk a bit about the cover photo. It's a mid-seventies style portrait of the band, all turtleneck sweaters and sideswipes and everyone looks pissed off. I get the feeling it is coming from some kind of sly Scandinavian humor angle. I mean, these are happy, do-things-to tunes, not dysfunctional, 1976 BO and polyester frustration songs. Hmmm, Sweden? Anyway if you are the type who likes to do things still, like writing real letters or painting for kicks or any other side project, give the Acid House Kings a chance to provide a background.
Oh yeah the name of band is a little misleading, at least it is to me. This is not Acid House music at all, I'm not sure what that is all about. I'll have to ask one of the millions of fans this band supposedly has in their home country, hmmm.
