Free-folksters Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice once again push eccentricity and free improv to the forefront on Gypsy Freedom
"Friend That Just Isn't So" is equal parts Kerouac and Charles Ives – a lovely female voice singing jazz verging on sprechstimme alongside a highly reactionary saxophone. Gorgeous!
Things head into free folk territory on the next track, "Didn't t Rain" – a slowly meandering descent into the inner workings of the mind – this is the kind of music that gave psyche music it's name.
Apparently wanting to keep listeners on their toes, things shift dramatically again on "Don't Love The Liar" which sounds like a psyche folk group doing Ozzy – don't ask... you've just got to listen to this track to understand what it sounds like when New Weird America tries its' delicate hand at heavy metal thunder.
Psyche-folk noodling continues until the sixth track, "Dread Effigy" which sounds like a combination of Wooden Wand and In Gowan Ring's distinctive brand of troubadour folk.
The first track's is conceptually reprised on the final track, "Genesis Joplin" which brings back the gorgeous female vocalist but replaces the saxophone with drums.
Gypsy Freedom will be appeal to fans of Sunburned Hand of the Man and The No Neck Blues Band.
