What is the opposite of...Rain…Rain…Rain….Cold….Rain….Wind…? The BESTIES! With the weather being what it has been, creeping into even my warmest sentiments, I feel incredibly lucky to have found this band to offer welcome shelter from the wet and cold. The Besties are a twee-pop-trio originally from Florida, who now bring the Big Apple a very warm, charming and sincere lift.

You know those kids who went to a school where the action was about learning and not all detention and vapid homework – the kind of school where you call your teachers by their first names? Yeah, I went to one of those, and the members of this band use the same dynamic. In other words I don't know their last names because they don't dish them, just their first names… nice… and they are the fellow, Rikky playing guitar and keyboards and vocals are from the ladies Kelly and Marisa. Hmmm I wonder if the drums come from the keyboards? Anyway the three members of this band lay out a sound that is cozy, a bit retro, stripped down, but not under-produced sounding, more like wood fireplace warmth as opposed to gas fake fireplace warmth.

The songs are about love, the experience of finding it and the sensation of having found it, even in outer-space and also without a soul, zombie-style! I find it strange and wonderful that this band can make falling for a member of the URRRGGE persuasion seem like a not too bad an idea, which actually brings up an interesting question. Why do zombies want brains, when what you would think they would be after is a soul, so wouldn't a heart hunger be a more likely menu drive?

I was putting together some soup (vegetarian!!) while I was listening to this album the first time and it occurred to me that not only did the music make the soup come together better, a kind of a happy swirling simmer occurred, I also ended up stirring and smiling. Looking out my big kitchen window into the grey and puddles and VERY early dusk outside, it looked beautiful. I chalk it up to the fact that it was warm and bright and fantastic sounding inside, and it smelled good too, mainly thanks to this album.

The Besties, I'm thinking that's a play on friends, are only doing some shows in NYC right now, but their album is going to come out on Valentine's Day, which is incredibly fitting considering the refreshing and endearing spin they put on love and songs written with it in mind and heart (pun kind of intended). Yeah twee, what the hell is that anyway, but if it is like this band sounds count me in with cinnamon hearts and withstanding weather appreciation! Oh and their cover photo is amazing too.
