The boys from Our Mercury, although young, have had ridiculous amounts of musical experience. They began performing under the name Misdemeanor when they were twelve and playing with huge punk names like Guttermouth and Good
Riddance. Now the boys are all grown up and although you can get punk out of these boys, their sound is definitely more refined. With obvious punk influence, Our Mercury’s first album, From Below, is definitely an enjoyable ride about what to do after you grow up and have to put some of your punk roots behind you. Everyone knows it’s still there, but Our Mercury went for more of a catchy, rough style that definitely works with their fast
playing style and deep scratchy vocals.
Our Mercury’s punk/ska influence can definitely be heard on songs such as “Spirits Up” and “Shawna Don’t Wanna”. “Shawna” is an extremely catchy song with fun keyboards and powerful guitar and drums. It’s a song about going out and having fun and it definitely makes you want to do just that. These songs are something that you want to listen to at a party with your friends and just have a good time to.
There are also songs with less punk influence on the album. “Bad Magic” is an example of a song that is more intense and mature. It is very refined and has a slightly surf-rock feel. The more subdued and melodic vocals really fit the feel of the song. It sounds as if there is a lot of emotion behind the lyrics; they are definitely more serious then some of the more pop-punk songs on this album. I really enjoyed this side of Our Mercury as well, because it shows that they are capable of a lot more then just playing fast.
Our Mercury’s From Below definitely has something for everyone: fast punk, catchy dance, and everything in between. These boys certainly have talent, and the amount of time they have spent playing together as a band definitely shows in how well executed every song is. This album is great for anyone who is punk rock at heart and just wants to have a good time with a great new band,
