A 5-CD set of bluegrass and Americana originally released on Joe Bussard's Fonotone record label, the 'last label in the land' still releasing records at 78-RPM. These revivalist recordings date from between 1956-1969 and have never been released before on CD. This compilation features 131 tracks, a 160-page book, 17 colur postcards. even a nickel-plated Fonotone bottle opener and comes packaged in a cigar box.

Many familiar names in the collection including the first ever recordings by John Fahey, Stefan Grossman, Mike Seeger, Joe Bussard himself and many many more. The pseudonym's reflect the good time nature of these sessions – Fahey appears under the names Blind Thomas and The Mississippi Swampers.

The recording quality is wonderful, tons of classic songs, great playing, a heck of a lot of fun.. This is not the compilation for those looking to explore the roots of American primitive music, but an absolutely wonderful collection of songs by second-generation folks who did to great effect. Delightful!
