House on a Hill’s second album, Ladyslipper, plays a lot like a Modest Mouse record, with intense, interesting instrumentals that show off the band’s talents as well as songs with catchy, inventive rhythms. It is a solid record that really did capture my heart. The sound is slightly foreboding, but in a way that makes you juts want to embrace the night and play the record all night long. It is a very hypnotizing album, with strange repetitive riffs and vocals that are spacey and seductive.

The first song on the album with vocals is “Gypsy”, it’s slightly twangy and creepy, but in the most enjoyable way. Sarah Kermanshahi has a lovely voice that recalls Brody Dahl when she is singing, not screaming; the kind of dark, raspy voice that every girl wishes to have. The guitar will put you in a trance with its simplicity and how all of it just combines together to completely engulf you in wonderful noise.

“GAN” is a the softest song on the record, both quite and pretty, the guitars sound delicate and the whole thing comes together like fine crystal. This all leads to a song that is mesmerizing and feels as if it has been stripped down to the bare basics of music. Of course through the simplicity and quietness of this song the incredible musicianship still comes out and there is no denying that this band has skill. So pretty, this song is one that I would listen to in my room by myself and I would feel completely content.

House on a Hill has put out a wonderful album both soothing and pretty. The band plans to do extensive touring for Ladyslippe to show off their musical ability, and I think that this is the perfect album for them to do that with. Everyone needs that relaxing album in their collection and this one is it.
