La Ninja is a collection of remixes of tracks from Mia Doi Todd's Manzanita. The album features tracks by a diverse group of artists: Nobody, Adventure Time, Scandinavian it-boys Dungen, Ammoncontact, Postal Service mastermind Dntel, Campanella/Hellie, Reminder, Flying Lotus and Chesie. It's amazing that this many artists could still produce a collection plays well as an album, but perhaps it speaks more to the power of Mia Doi Todd's artistic vision that it provides a cohesion across the tracks.

The beauty of her voice and delivery, her incredible songs and her mystical magical lyrics will certainly dazzle anyone unfamiliar with Mia Doi Todd. I don't know if this is accurate, but I like to think of her as a psyche-folk Kate Bush. One thing is for sure - her upper register, with vibrato, is one of the most beautiful things I have ever had the pleasure to hear.

The artists remixing her tracks appear to have a great deal of respect for her sound – while they all add their own sonic signatures and coloration to the tracks, they still let her voice shine through and no one abstracts the songs too far. Mixes vary from acoustic - Dungen's mix of "My Room Is White" for example– to fairly electronic – take for example Dntel's take on "Deep At Sea".

As an added bonus, Mia Doi Toddd contributes four brand new songs to La Ninja, "Amor", "Kokoro", "Shikibu" and a cover of the Beatles classic, "Nowegian Wood". All beautiful tracks worth the price of admission alone.

Those already familiar with Manzanita will delight in hearing its songs in this new context, and those new to this important new artist will be astonished by her beautiful sound. And the four new tracks are just that much more of an incentive to pick up La Ninja. Absolutely gorgeous. Highly, highly recommended.
