Self-described as Paul Kelly meets the Streets, to me Modern Giant sounded a bit more like Velocity Girl meets Billy Bragg, and indeed one of the band members can be seen holding a vinyl copy of an album by the British bard in their press photo.

Mixing jangly indie pop with roots-rock acoustic guitars and nostalgic spoken word sections from writer/bass player Adam Gibson, this is a curious little gem. Modern Giant is a Sydney, Australia band and Gibson's spoken word sections, the strongest parts of this album, attempt to document the countries' stories in song, while the band provides a counterpoint with easy breezy pop songs. I have a feeling fondness for this album could grow with repeat listens as the bittersweet humor of Gibson's stories starts to sink and endear itself.
