Fans of old old old school rap will find a treasure trove of lost classsics on, The Celluloid Years. This new compilation of old tracks from the early eighties originally released on Bill Laswell's Ceulloloid Records features artists like Time Zone, Grandmixer D.S.T., Fab Five Freddy, saxophonist Manu Dibango, Deadline, Shango, The Last Poets and Tribe 2. There's even a track by legendary graffiti artist Futura 2000, and he raps about... .you guessed it – graffiti! Also present are contributions from John Lydon, The Clash and Afrika Bambaataa!
These are the people that helped lay the blueprint for rap and electro and all kinds of other music to follow. There's two CDs worth of their pioneering talent on The Celluloid Years featuring the tasty old school Linn Drum beats and lots of that awkward, we're-creating-this-new-music-and-we-haven't-perfected-it-yet rap style.
An other noteworthy aspect of Celluloid and this compilation is turn is the mixing of genres and unexpected collaborations - Afrika Bambaataa paired up with John Lydon, The Clash backing up Futura 2000. It was an experimental, creative time in music history and it's captured here over the span of 21 tracks with a variety of dub versions, extended mixes, french versions, and instrumental edits.
If you're longing to dig deeper into the vaults of hip hop history, The Celluloid Years is a great place to start. Recommended
