The Winks are an impossible-to-pigeonhole band from Vancouver featuring mandolin, cello, woodwinds, percussion and electronics. Their live show has aspects of the chaotic electronic pop of Xiu Xiu, cabaret, classical, free improv, noise and twee. The Winks half of this split CD alternates between chaotic and majestic, quiet and loud, cute and abrasive. The mandolin, cello and woodwinds add a great deal to their appeal. Some songs skew towards the pop side of life, others are instrumental, electronic and more experimental. The 7 songs on this CD provide a very nice introduction to their broad beautiful palette of sound.
Tights are two Winks, Tyr and Todd on cello and mandolin, respectively, along with the laptop wizardry of Secret Mommy's Andy Dixon. Where Winks dabble in both the pop and experimental, Tights is much more focused on the experimental and noisy, with Todd and Tyr feeding Andy free-improv soundbites that he prods and pulls every which way, creating glitches and distortion and other electronic textures. It's a beautiful mess!
Fans of Secret Mommy's work with conceptually-driven sound sources will be curious to hear what he can do with two live musicians to work with, while fans of experimental pop in the style of Xiu Xiu – minus the sturm-und-drang – will take pleasure in the Winks. Recommended.
