Was there a Japanese John Hughes offering up classic 80's tales of heartbroken Japanese kids turn out happy in the end when the underdog finally wins out and finds true love?

Such are the questions that Asobi Seksu inspires. Sounding like a perfect cross between Swirlies, Velocity Girl, Icicle Works, My Bloody Valentine with lots of majestic 80's dream-pop, this New York City band makes me want to realize that I'm not in love with the prettiest girl in the school but with the tomboyish - Japanese - drummer chick that I always thought of as one of the guys until she let down her hair. More specifically, Absobi Seksu's sound is comprised of female vocals, sung in Japanese, are backed up by synths, pianos, drums, and lots of guitars of both the clean of shoe-gazer dirty variety.

Cleverly packaged in an orange jewel case with orange and red printing to accentuate the effect of its album title, Asobi Seksu's newest album, Citrus is the perfect backdrop for a dreamy summertime romance.

Tempestous, stormy, gorgeous, breezy, haunting, aching, lovely – I could run down an endless list of adjectives to describe this beautiful album but you're better off picking it up for yourself and coming up with your own. High alert for fans of twee and indie-pop - Asobi Seksu could be your new favorite band. Give Citrus a squeeze.
