The beardo set will be pretty excited about this one – Vancouver's Ladyhawk have a slacker country-rock vibe that really rocks in a timeless way that will appeal to fans of Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr. Uncle Tupelo, Quasi and other likeminded rockers. Their new album on Storyboard/Jagjaguwar features members of Black Mountain guesting and mixing.

Some truly killer songs open the album – "Dugout" and "My Old Jackknife" in particular are outstanding. Things drag a little bit after that – I find the fourth track. "Long 'Til The Morning" completely, unlistenably boring, although I suspect that the Black Mountain fans might find it appealing. Fortunately things pick up again quickly.

Ladyhawk has a fairly epic sound that combines dirty guitars with lots of nice leads and balls out drumming. Similarly, the vocals often just hit and sometimes cross the threshold of distortion. The recording quality is fairly raw and nicely matches the band's rough-around-the-edges sound.

What's up with the sexy, masked naked chick in the forest on the record cover? Gratuitous psych-rock nudity that recalls those famously sexy Aids Wolf photos. Whatever. This is a great album for the rock crowd. Recommended.
