An interesting and very enjoyable collection of Panamanian music from the years 1965-1975. Panama is a country that has been largely overlooked in world music explorations – so it's nice that Soundway has finally shed some light on the subject – it was well deserved. There is clearly a lot of great music there to be discovered.
This compilation presents a nice mix of Latino music, jazzy soul and funk music, all of these tracks previously unreleased on CD and unavailable since their original small-press vinyl pressings.
The bulk of the album is made up of great mambo and salsa tracks and also funky-soul-jazz type numbers. There are lots of wonderful departures as well. One track from Los Dinamicos Exciters resembles James Brown-style funk, another from Los Mozambiques bears resemblance to Santana. There is also some excellent Calypso courtesy of Lord Cobra and Pana Afro Sounds as well as Los Silvertones.
All in all a fascinating and highly listenable collection and of great interest to fans of uncharted world music and Latin sounds. Recommended.
