From the folks who brought us the magnificent Le Pop compilations of current French pop music comes this album of gentle pop from Germany’s Geka.

Geka is a female singer/songwriter with a fragile voice that recalls French chanteuses, Vashti Bunyan and Margo Guryan. Under the vocals and acoustic guitar Geka has a full backing band on this outing – including piano, bass and drums.

The band could stand to be more gentle to match Geka’s voice and guitar – they are a bit too rock and roll. In the future it would be nice to see Geka work with someone like Gonzales who could provide her gorgeous voice with the sort of accompaniment she deserves.

A more orchestral, painterly approach towards the production might have worked wonders to an already great foundation, especially considering that Geka cites late-period Beach Boys as one of her influences.

Geka is a wonderful new voice that will be a hit with fans of the aforementioned artists and French pop music. Very pretty!
