From Tigerbeat6 records, Drop the Lime’s latest album, We Never Sleep, is an impressive artistic statement of skill and creativity. The first song, “Wake Up Call”, has a notable, strong delivery of well-written lyrics. The beat follows an organic logic, respecting the body to flow on the energetic and gripping sounds. An emotional connection is felt right away.
“Devil’s Kick” inspires images of a feverish drugged-out club scene. “Coal Oven Fevers” embodies the atmosphere of the album; a mix of upbeat sounds in a dark setting, creating a delicate balance of lighthearted fun, with lurking darker questions. In “Butterscotch”, Drop the Lime shows off his smooth voice. “Full Moon Rising” has a slightly creepy, but gripping chorus that will stick with you. Each song is a universe to explore. The last song, “Skyline Fantasy”, has a nice drum line, to which more and more sounds are slowly added to build up to a great dance track.
We Never Sleep has a few instrumental tracks mixed in. I’m never a big fan of instrumentals, but these are short enough, non-repetitive and evenly distributed.
With all of these elements combined, the end result is an album both smart and cool; something that you can appreciate for its well-mixed tracks and poetic lyrics or that you can just bounce along to.
