Junica is a strong debut for New Zealand-based guitar/laptop duo, Over The Atlantic. Knee-tapping electronic beats accompany affable melodies of youthful love, breaking-up, and reuniting. Clean guitars cut to messy distortion and abet a neo-nineties English flavor that permeates the album.

Computer percussion is no replacement for a human (and it’s not supposed to be), but, at times, the blips, clicks, and electric snare can’t support moments of high intensity. Dynamics suffer at the limits of a laptop: when crashing guitars burst into “Glass Breaks”, for instance, the percussion remains relatively static (perhaps decidedly off-balanced). These moments of restricted intentions, however, are few and far between.

The album’s packed with melodic gems, such as “Heart Land”, as well as instances of fresh innovation, such as the growling, scathing guitar-work in “France.” Overall, Junica’s a great start, fit for fans of Postal Service and the like.

Nice laptop love to complement the broken-hearteds’ online soul-mate searches.
