Marching straight out of Oakland like a troupe of mad clowns with razor sharp teeth and pitch-black eyeholes is the high-intensity musical violence of Experimental Dental School. Like Snakes On A Plane, E.D.S. gives everything away in its name. Their latest chaotic release would perfectly complement a nightmarish trip to the dentist: metallic drilling, hacking and chipping of teeth, slicing gums, choking on saliva, hairy manly fingers relentlessly penetrating you orally... wider . . . WIDER!
21/2 Creatures more accurately has a fervent ‘carnival-esque’ sound with slight hints of Primus and Ween’s The Pod. Choppy drums dance between quick polka and gloomy head hammering collisions; Hall’s “guitar-o-bass” (custom low-tuned guitar with bass strings) and distorted voice assault the songs like an enraged android; and, all the while, Horikawa fingers a Casiotone organ like a chorus of screaming children, then sings like an angel.
For the adventurous listener, E.D.S. opens the black tent to their unpredictable psycho circus: a lurid place where Ted Bundy struts as ringmaster; Robert Pickton twists and twirls with his lovely acrobats; Jack the Ripper juggles his bloody knives; and Jeffrey Dahmer runs the concession.
Recommended for those who take pleasure in chewing tinfoil. Not recommended if you’re afraid of clowns.
