This newest 7-inch in the Ache record Div/Orce series sees Of paired up with Greg Davis. Of is also known as Loren Chasse of San Francisco's Jewelled Antler Collective fame. In addition to Of and solo work, Chasse plays in The Blithe Sons and the Skygreen Leopards. Davis is a Vermont artist. with releases on Kranky and Carpark and a standout track on the Ache Records Project:Bicycle CD.

The Of side is typically abstract and dark - the first time I bought an Of album was at Aquarius Records. I took it back to my girlfriend's house, put it on, fell asleep, and woke up from a nightmare to this creepy music still playing. It was then I decided that Jewelled Antler were not simply the peace-loving forest free-folk San Francisco hippy sound artists I originally thought them to be. This record is a beautiful, creepy, strangely short statement from Chasse. I'm so used to these kinds of records being very long that it's nice to hear what the artist sounds like in the limitation of a 7-inch record.

Davis' side is a whole other bag. Pretty as heck, with shimmery harps, running water, fingerpicked guitar and a bellows instrument, but this isn't new age music – it's way too busy and assertive to sound like Windham Hill and has some dissonant abrasive sounds mixed in. Again, a very brief statement, and a very pretty one.

Both sides are so short that they become very memorable - like visual art or a classical electronic music study with very defined parts. As soon as you start to decode the soundscape it disappears. Highly recommended, charmingly brief introduction to both Greg Davis and one aspect of the multi-facted Jewelled Antler Collective sound.
