Bluster Cragg & Awe

Tirath Singh Nirmala

Digitalis, 2006

Digitalis was kind enough to bring us this first non-CD-R release from the artist now known as Tirath Sing Nirmala after conversion to Sikhism, formerly John Clyde-Evans of Hood.

Collecting tracks from previously released CD-Rs, Bluster, Crag, & Awe sounds like what you might expect from a guy who spent a lot of time in India, converted to an eastern religion and also happens to be best friends with the guy from Vibracathedral Orchestra. Always compelling, sometimes beautiful, sometimes driving & ectsatic eastern-tinged avant-drones with a hefty dose of mysticism thrown in for good measure. Over the course of an hour, tracks feature exotic instruments, droning chants and electronic bits.

This will be meat & drink to fans of Jewelled Antler, Current 93, Six Organs, Islaja, Es, all that Finnish stuff, Sunburned Hand, etc etc. The final track features experimental guitarist Richard Youngs, perhaps now most famous for accompanying Jandek for the reclusive master's first known live performance. For those who relish the though of a healthy dose of Eastern mysticism and a bit of electronics thrown into their free-forest-folk drones, this is great stuff. Highly recommended.
