White Man At The Door

White Man At The Door

The Lost Domain

Digitalis, 2007

White Man At The Door is almost an excellent release, I say almost because I found the songs to drag towards the end. They start off really well in a sort of old time blues feel, with a Captain Beefheart style of vocalization. And a gritty, dirty barroom brawl type of musicality; Attempting to portray a guttural response to the world the hardships of mankind and all that. The nitty grity of life spewed out for us to face.

An interesting attempt to make it sound old tyme. And, in this, they do sound really good, it is quite a noble attempt. I mean it really does sound deep and depressing and not just like it's trying to sound like that. It actually pulls off sounding old, which again is impressive. I try to sound old all the time and no one ever believes me.

And I've heard other bands try this and just come across as some jerk trying to sound like he's old and lived through the depression and that; when really they just sound like a studio creation of that era of music. The Lost Domain completely avoid that and go straight into sounding good, which I must say I was rather surprised about, as I tend to be a little cynical when approaching stuff like this. Like if it was already good why recreate it, right?

But sometimes, sometimes even I can be swayed. I just wish there was a bit more variety in the songs to make the length a little bit more justified. Just a little something. Like some sort of push to add an extra gasp of air to this release.
