Vancouver-based A Ghost to Kill Again is debuting their first album on April 6, 2007 at the Waldorf Hotel. This tropical-themed party will be a high energy event for any enthusiast to witness creative and quality musicianship implemented to rock music that grabs you by the collar and makes your head bop.
The guys: Aaron Joyce (guitars, vocals and sythnisizers); Alvaro Rojas (guitar, autoharp, and vocals); Cory Curtis (bass and vocals); and Sam Cartwright (drums and vocals) all play around with key changes and meters to operate as an experimental jazz group during some of the solos. The harmonic organization of the vocals are powerful and well composed. The sound is very progressive, new and precise. The guitars do a nice mixture of plucking and strumming techniques, the bass provides a good fundamental to the group and is mixed like a heart beat, the drum grooves are innovative, the solos are not too showy but show that these guys are all very comfortable at their craft.
The whole feeling the band creates is very static and on your toes but they still maintain a classic resonance. I am impressed with the number of sections that each song has; the form is unpredictable but very digestible, and sometimes by the end of the song you suddenly remember how it started. A Ghost to Kill Again really takes you on a trip -storytelling through musical formulas.
I must compliment the bass playing in "Halo", it really is the personality to this song’s groove. In my opinion, this should be the second single on the record. The guitars are strong; the melody and vocals are well-drawn; the drumming and meter is unremitting and the energy is commanding and diverse… but my favorite is the mountain it features each instrument evenly, the guitars harmonize each other nicely and overall has the most fastening vigor and movement. The whole album is consistently energetic and is a very solid unveiling.
While listening to the CD and knowing the Vancouver scene well, I think Vancouver is going to become strong music hub in Canada once again. There are loads of fantastic bands in this town it is going to prevail shortly. A Ghost to Kill Again is probably the best on the rock scene right now. Be the first to know!
