Small Sails

Other Electricities, 2007

Similar Anniversaries is the full-length debut release
by Portland, Oregon’s Small Sail – Adam
Porterfield, Ryan Jeffery, Gary Jimmerson and Ethan
Rose.  The CD is a fine piece of work: very pleasant
sounding, mellow dramatic and an easy listening
version to Dosh and that functions like Halifax’s Holy
Fuck.

The sound is very much electronic and much more
sedated than the comparisons I have given. Small Sails
works with live sampling and redundantly driving an
idea to its limit.  Technically speaking, the music’s
role is a theme and variations template featuring
computer glitches, melodies from voice, guitar, bass
and synthesizers.

Small Sails makes your head bop and in a
small way it’s thought provoking- given the right
atmosphere. I can imagine that the live show may be
much more impressionable than the album itself… and
that is always the mark of a good group anyway. I
would jump at the opportunity to see these guys
perform live.

Portland Oregon is home to many great groups and has a
very supportive scene. It’s a music enthusiast’s
capital. In Portland, you’re more likely to go out and
see live music than to stay in for the night- so it’s
no surprise that the city has an eclectic mix of
groups emerging from it constantly.
