This is a re-release of a seventies psychedelic sitar music LP of Ananda Shankar, that was originally released only in India. According to the record label’s information this is a unique album that served to be a sample for many other sitar music combinations of funk and jazz and later dj remixes and samplings. A.
Shankar was one of the first musicians to combine the psych-funk of the West with his Indian traditional sitar music. On this album we also hear Indian tabla, flute, singing and drums played with Western instruments like guitars, drums, organ and even classical flute.
I think it is a treasure find for many fans of psychedelic Indian music and for the fans of the seventies Bollywood movies as well. One can only imagine the success it had in India especially during the times of such movies as Don.
This record never ceases to surprise one with new instrumentation, this way it never wears out its "funkiness", it doesn’t become tiresome or boring. The traditional mellow tunes of India blend well with funk instrumentation of the Westen instruments.
At times one gets a stronger sense of the traditional Indian music on some tracks whereas on others it is well mixed with funk rhythms to give the album the inevitable flavour of its times.
So if you feel like listening to some funkified sitar music and relaxing back into the psychedelic good times, this record could suit you.
