This mostly jazz fusion album is Afuche’s first aproach at making music in a new way. While the two original band members, Zach Ryalls and Ruben Sindo Acosta are also intense multi-instrumentalists switching between wurlitzer, clarinet, drums, electric guitars, they are also joined by other instrumentalists.
The tracks on Carajo Is Worse than Hell switch between episodic moments of klezmer, afro-beat and jazz. The band members share a common passion for the music from film scores of Marricone, Fela Kuti, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans and Arsenio Rodriguez. These influences are felt strongly on the album which is the creation of its band members.
Together, their sound is reminiscent of Tom Waits and John Zorn, the kind of jazz music that will definitely make you think of smoky, dimly-lit back rooms in bars and cafes, where the night takes on a magical essence.
